All of our writing boxes or writing slopes are either in superb original condition or have been sympathetically restored on our own workshops. As the youngest of these is over 100yrs old, time is telling on them and they are becoming more difficult to find in good condition. Somewhere in the region of 80% have had their leathers replaced due to the originals drying and decaying. The boxes we supply are generally without ink wells, this because they are usually broken or missing, however ,we do stock reproduction ones (ink wells)
The boxes we now offer as jewellery boxes are in fact sewing boxes, which have been converted in our own workshops,by fitting trays and lining in various cotton fabrics .The boxes are all at least 100 yrs old and where necessary restored and repolished, this service is also available within our restoration service for customers own boxes. We are sometimes able to offer sewing boxes in their original condition ,with all of their tray, sections and linings still intact, please contact us for availability.
Tea caddies stock The caddies we offer date from 1750 to 1900 with the carcasses usually being formed in pine or oak and veneered in Mahogany,Oak,Walnut or Rosewood. It is becoming very difficult to find good original boxes and this is reflected in the prices, some of those on offer have been sympathetically restored, where possible,to their original condition.
These boxes were originally made for the Victorian ladies and gentlemen to carry their toiletries when they traveled the world. They were usually made of Rosewood,Mahogany, or Corramandle veneers with mother of pearl, brass or silver inlays, with silver topped bottles and ivory handled tools.
This section covers various other types of boxes that are not covered by the above, table boxes were generally used for display purposes, being placed on side tables or mantelpieces .They usually contained small personal items of jewellery or keepsakes, letters etc. We also include other interesting items within this section
